Dana Point

Welcome to Dana Point

Dana Point's history is steeped in maritime lore, beginning with the description of its majestic headlands by Richard Henry Dana Jr. in his 1840 memoir, Two Years Before the Mast, where he famously dubbed the area "the only romantic spot in California." The city was officially incorporated in 1989, but its development began in the 1920s when a syndicate led by Hollywoodland developer Sidney H. Woodruff planned a grand, Mediterranean-inspired resort town. This vision is preserved in the downtown Lantern District, where the sloping streets are whimsically named after colored lanterns—a nod to the maritime signals ships once used when anchored in the natural cove below for "hide-droghing," or trading cured cowhides. Dana Point's past also includes a pivotal moment in surf history, as the "Killer Dana" break was legendary among early California surfers, establishing the city's enduring connection to the sport.

The lifestyle in Dana Point is a sophisticated blend of small-town intimacy and upscale coastal living, all centered around the bustling Dana Point Harbor. Residents embrace an active, outdoor life, taking advantage of premier surfing at Salt Creek and Doheny State Beach, and exploring the scenic trails of the Headlands Conservation Area. The Harbor itself is the city's heart, offering whale watching tours, sport fishing, boating excursions, and waterfront dining. Highlights of the city's cultural calendar include the annual Festival of Whales, which celebrates the migration of the California gray whale, and the Tall Ships Festival, which pays homage to its seafaring past. With a population of just over 33,000, Dana Point maintains a close-knit community feel while offering the luxury amenities of a world-class destination.

Dana Point is composed of distinct neighborhoods, each offering a unique character and housing style. The historic Lantern District serves as the walkable downtown hub, featuring a mix of restored Spanish-style homes and modern residences with ocean views. Capistrano Beach (Capo Beach) offers a more laid-back, "old-school" beach vibe with quaint cottages and bluff-front estates, including those stemming from oil magnate Edward Doheny's early development efforts. On the city's northern end, the community of Monarch Beach provides luxury living, primarily defined by high-end resorts, golf course access at Monarch Beach Golf Links, and prestigious gated enclaves like Ritz Pointe and Niguel Shores. Meanwhile, Dana Hills, located inland from the coast, offers a more suburban atmosphere popular with families, with many homes showcasing the classic Spanish Revival architectural themes.
